Central Virginia Regional Jail Overview

Central Virginia Regional Jail is operated by the Central Virginia Regional Jail Authority. It is a regional adult jail rather than an Orange County Sheriff's Office jail. Official Orange County materials say the authority serves Orange, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Madison Counties and provides secure confinement for adults convicted or accused of criminal activity.

The facility is in the Town of Orange and is the main adult detention facility for Orange County jail custody. CVRJ's own history page says it houses local, state, and federal prisoners. The public visitation text reviewed contains a schedule conflict: one sentence says visits are Friday through Monday, while the non-official visitation section says Monday through Friday. Because times vary by cellblock, confirm the current schedule directly with the jail.

Central Virginia Jail History

CVRJ became operational on September 1, 1990. The facility history page says the original design capacity was 96 and the original staff count was 50. The jail then grew through a 1995 expansion that added a 50-bed dormitory and two classrooms, followed by a 1999 expansion that added 101 beds, an infirmary, indoor recreation, expanded visitation space, laundry, a larger vehicular sally port, and other spaces.

The facility also says it received 100 percent ratings on early DOC audits and maintained that rating on later three-year and unannounced inspections. In 1995, the jail was certified by the National Institute of Corrections for its Objective Jail Classification Program. Classification is the custody-level and housing process used after intake to help decide where a person is placed inside the jail.
